Jason Llantero
Jason Llantero became a basketball head coach for the first time back in 1999-2000. He first started coaching basketball and teaching at Woodside in 2013-2014. He was the varsity boys coach for 2.5 seasons before stepping down in 2016 due to family commitments (having twins!). He rejoined to coach basketball for the girls program, as a part-time assistant on JV (starting in January 2018) then as the JV head coach (2018-2019). He has been the varsity head coach of the girls basketball program starting in 2019-2020.

While Coach Jason grew up attending team basketball camps of both Bob Knight and Rick Majerus, he is also heavily influenced by college and professional coaches: John McLendon, Chuck Daly, Dean Smith, Nolan Richardson, Gregg Popovich, Mike Neighbors, and Dr. George Barber. He is also a big fan of legendary high school coaches Pam Wimberly, Keith Haske, Don Lippi, and Alicia Komaki.

Coach Jason is also an Independent Living Skills teacher at Woodside High School. He and his wonderful team work with students with moderate to severe learning disabilities and help the students prepare for their daily and future adventures.

Coach Jason enjoys spending time with family, reading books, solving innovative puzzles, and discussing strategy for all types of competition. He considers himself the "luckiest man in the world" for being blessed with his endearing twin daughters and amazing wife.

Coach Jason looks forward to guiding our student-athletes to be the best versions of themselves, creating meaningful habits, and supporting them in reaching for their goals both on and off the court. Let’s get this bread and Go Wildcats!

Girls JV Basketball Head Coach - Nick Fiorentinos

Girls JV Basketball Head Coach - Nick Fiorentinos
title

Nick F.
Nick Fiorentinos has been coaching youth basketball in the Bay Area since 1985 in many different capacities, first through his church basketball league, then through private basketball programs, and then public high schools all while running his own AAU Program as well.

While mostly coaching boys over the years, he started coaching his daughter's 4th grade team over 13 years ago and says that coaching girls has been more rewarding and the best experiences of his coaching career as he realized the life changing impacts to the girls were far more significant than on any boys team he ever coached.  Nick coached at various high schools in theTri-Valley working his way from Freshman Coach at San Ramon Valley High School to Head Varsity Coach and Program Coordinator at Monte Vista High School in Danville. Nick thought he retired from coaching when he moved back to the Peninsula after 25 years in San Ramon, but did a two-year stint at Oceana during the covid years, and then thought he retired again for good a couple of years ago, but his passion for coaching is evident and he returns to coaching again.

Nick offers a unique approach to coaching which actually focuses on helping players on the mental side of the game as much as the physical side and really emphasizes helping players overcome their fears to gain confidence not just in basketball but in their overall lives.  He prides himself on this approach and really helps his students learn and take accountability for their actions and helps them understand that they will have to work hard to achieve results, and that they can accomplish a lot if they are honest and willing to put forth the necessary effort.

Nick works full-time for the U.S. Coast Guard as a Real Estate Contracting Officer helping maintain their search and rescue communication system. He is a San Francisco native having attended Lowell High School and San Francisco State while working his way through college at the nearby Emporium Department Store.  Nick says he spent those eight years of his life within that one-mile radius, so he learned to love traveling a lot more after that, so he is frequently off on some adventure overseas. He's been married for 28 years to his supportive wife and has two grown children who also live in the area.  In addition to traveling, he also enjoys creating music, singing and songwriting and he is an avid supporter of all the San Francisco sports franchises.

Coach Mike Shinn, JV Girls Basketball

Mike Shinn grew up playing sports. “I was a classic gym rat, or in my case, an asphalt rat,” says Mike of his athletic childhood.  Mike attended high school and community college in Rockford, IL. He has a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University and an M.S. in Finance from Golden Gate University. Mike has an extensive background in sports and coaching. He coached both boys and girls for six years at Kennedy Middle School and this is now Mike’s seventh year coaching at Woodside. He has been the assistant varsity coach for five seasons and the assistant JV coach for two seasons. This is Mike’s second year as JV head coach. Mike says his favorite thing about coaching is to see the improvement in players on a daily basis. In addition to coaching, Mike is a volunteer as an AARP Tax Aide during tax season. Mike has been married for 34 years, has a son and daughter who are both in their 30’s, and his main hobbies are playing guitar and hiking.

Additional Information: “In high school I was a practice player on a very good team, and I kept working hard on my game until I was 30.  I would play in recreational, church, intra-mural, and industrial leagues and played most weeknights wherever I could find a game.  The highest level I ever played was A league industrial basketball in Phoenix, AZ with many ex-college and high school players.  I continued to play in recreation leagues in Redwood City and Palo Alto until I was 45.”
